What to pack for Cusco

Cusco has basically two seasons; rainy and non-rainy but it is always sunny by day and cold at night. Given it is located in the mountains (3,400m a.s.l) the temperature can drop to 5° C in the shadow (early mornings and late evenings). The rainy season goes from November to April and the dry season from May to October.

The best way to prepare for the weather in Cusco is layers; a basic top might go handy with a vest and complemented with a jacket or sweater for later in the day. Different to Lima (the capital of Peru), the weather up in the mountains is not humid, a good face moisturizer is a must to start the day as well as sunscreen for protection if spending days wandering through the ruins or sailing on the lakes. A lip balm and hand cream will keep you perfect for the rest of the day.

Cusco’s streets are covered in cobble stones and the key attractions to explore require a lot of walking and endless stairs. Packing your favourite sneakers is key for comfort and a cap or a stylish hat is recommended if you plan a day a la Indiana Jones.

If coming during the rainy season, don’t forget your raincoat or a jacket that is non-permeable for such conditions.

Cuzco is one place to feel liberated, whether because of the clean air, the friendly people, the international vibe or the awe of being surrounded by ancient civilizations. Above everything, make sure you bring an open mind and explore the city with great curiosity.
